Unique Device Identification System: Overview and FDA Regulatory Update

This session will provide those new to health care supply chain or those needing a refresher, an overview of the UDI System and its benefits. It will include defining the parts of the Unique Device Identifier (UDI), the relationship of the identifier to data in GUDID, the need for ongoing quality improvement, and the importance of participation by all stakeholders to realize UDI system benefits for health care delivery.

An update on the most current FDA regulations will be provided and participants will gain insight into future FDA initiatives as well as collaborations underway between the FDA and CMS.

LUC tools to Assist with UDI Adoption

Speaker: Carl Gomberg, Lead Solution Analyst, Premier, Inc

The Learning UDI Community (LUC) chartered the Transactional Efficiency workgroup to identify opportunities to expand adoption and maximize utilization of the UDI. In this session participants will learn about the mapping tools that were created to assist providers and suppliers in using the UDI in Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) transaction sets to reduce errors and improve efficiency. The maps provide a simple “how-to” guide with links to additional educational materials. This session will also share the workgroup’s Best Practices guide for improving data quality in the Global UDI Database (GUDID). Including examples of how providers are using the data from GUDID to improve operations and enhance patient safety.

Wednesday, November 1

UDI: The Key to Improving Supply Chain Efficiency and Enhancing Patient Care

Maximizing the use of the UDI can improve supply chain operations for both manufacturers and health care providers. For providers it can also improve clinical workflow efficiency, enhance patient care, and provide the information necessary to position the organization for the future. In this practical how-to session learn how one organization partnered with its manufacturers to use the UDI in their EDI transaction to improve supply chain operations. They then expanded into using it to capture information at the point of care.

UDI: Challenges and Benefits from Manufacturers Perspective

It has been ten years since the FDA’s Unique Device Identifier ruling went into effect and set out a tiered schedule, based on medical device classification, for compliance. As of September 24, 2022, all manufacturers are required to comply. Find out from leading manufacturers their perspective on the successes and challenges of achieving the full benefits the use of the UDI can provide. Learn how manufacturers and provides can leverage each other’s knowledge and resources to expand adoption and maximize utilization.

Mike and Nancy will summarize the highlights of the Forum, and share a glimpse of the LUC roadmap ahead, challenging each participant to create their own individualized plan on what actions they will take to move beyond the vision to our future goal – ubiquitous use of the UDI across the health care ecosystem.
